Biljana Kuzmanović Elabjer
Education and professional development
Prof. Biljana Kuzmanović Elabjer completed her medical education at the esteemed School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. Demonstrating an early passion for ophthalmology and medical research, she pursued and completed two postgraduate studies at the same university. Her dedication culminated in the attainment of both a master’s degree and a PhD, with her research focusing on ultrasound biometry in ophthalmology.
Work experience
Prof. Kuzmanović Elabjer specialized in ophthalmology, undergoing extensive training at several prestigious international clinics. Her training included stints at Katharinenhospital Augenklinik in Stuttgart, Germany, Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and Salisbury District Hospital in Salisbury, Great Britain. She further honed her expertise with a subspecialty in anterior segment and oculoplastic surgery.
Currently, she serves as the deputy head of the Eye Clinic at University Hospital “Sveti Duh” in Zagreb, where she also leads the Department of the Anterior Segment of the Eye. Her leadership and expertise have been instrumental in advancing the clinic’s capabilities and reputation.

Scientific and teaching activities
Prof. Biljana Kuzmanović Elabjer is a prolific author and researcher, having co-authored 17 university textbooks, published more than 80 articles in journals, with almost 500 citations and contributed over two hundred conference abstracts. She is frequently invited as a lecturer at international congresses, sharing her expertise and insights with the global medical community.
Her special interests include cataract surgery, with an impressive record of over 30,000 operated patients, as well as eyelid and orbit surgery. Her outstanding scientific work in this area earned her the E.S.O.P.R.S. Junior Award in 2000 for the best scientific work by a young scientist under the age of 35.
In recognition of her contributions, she received the Award of the City of Zagreb in 2016 as part of the team on the project “Amblyopia in four-year-old children of the City of Zagreb.”
Additionally, she has published two atlases on ultrasound of the eye and orbit, further cementing her status as a leading expert in the field. Her ultrasound images scientifically contributed the book: Pichi, Francesco & Neri, Piergiorgio. (2020). Complications in Uveitis. 10.1007/978-3-030-28392-6.
Professional meetings and Membership
A member of numerous domestic and international professional associations such as HOOD, SIDUO, ESCRS, ESOPRS, Prof. Biljana Kuzmanović Elabjer is a respected voice in the ophthalmology community.
She has co-organized numerous scientific and expert meetings, both domestic and international, such as the The International European Strabismological Association meeting in Zagreb in 2023.
She currently serves as the Head of the Reference Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia for standardized echography in ophthalmology and the president of the Ultrasound Diagnostics Organization of Ophthalmology of Croatian Ophthalmology and Optometric Society, where she continues to drive advancements and uphold the highest standards in medical ultrasound diagnostics.
